With sports and bicycling accidents being the top cause, 1 in 10 teens sustained at least ONE concussion in the
past 12 months. While 6% reported having TWO OR MORE. This totals an estimated 3.5 million high school
concussions in the U.S. alone. A child with a TBI is up to 3 times more likely to develop alcohol abuse, 2 times
likely to develop drug abuse, and 6 times more likely to be arrested by the time they are 25 years old. An
additional 3.5 million adults are estimated to have a concussion annually. And as many as 60% of all
concussions go unreported.
While head injuries may be difficult to prevent, early identification and proper treatment/referral remains the
best way to preserve the health of our communities. In this course we will examine the research to understand
what comprises a comprehensive concussion baseline test, and how to implement it in practice.
Take Away:
1. Understand the magnitude and consequences of concussions
2. Learn the types of concussions
3. Recognize the value and need for comprehensive baseline testing
4. Discover the components of an integrated, multi-faceted concussion assessment/baseline
